The Philadelphia 76ers will certainly enter the 2024-25 season as one of the most interesting teams in the NBA. Already led by a league MVP in Joel Embiid with a young robin in Tyrese Maxey, who won the Most Improved Player award last season, alongside him, the team has managed to add a nine-time All-Star in Paul George, forcing them to dig a third cavern for a coveted Big Three.
With such a star-studded roster, the 76ers’ coaching staff will have some interesting decisions to make next season, particularly in terms of game management. All three players can run the offense in their own way, but the ball is unable to clone itself on the floor, which begs the question: Who will take the final shot for the team next season?
In the latest episode of Podcast P with Paul GeorgeOklahoma City Thunder’s Chet Holmgren asked George which of him or Embiid would take the final shot for the 76ers in the deciding games next season.
George, after some hesitation, preferred not to give a direct answer and replied that it would be Nick Nurse who would decide next season, admitting that he had played with other superstars before and had learned to live with the results.
While it was a light-hearted moment, George didn’t mention the fact that Tyrese Maxey took the final shot. It’s not his fault at all, but some fans certainly think last season’s star deserves at least an All-Star nod.
Maxey doesn’t have the depth of experience that his other two co-stars boast, but he’s just as adept, if not better, at the end of games. He was the sixth-leading scorer in decisive moments in the last playoffs and finished in the top 15 in decisive goals during the regular season. Slowly, he’s climb the ladder among the elite leaders of the association
PG’s omission of Maxey doesn’t necessarily reflect how he feels about the young star, but shifting the focus from him to Embiid is a mistake in itself.
Or maybe we could just give Holmgren the biggest piece of the blame pie, if you will.
