If your professional basketball dreams are still alive, there may be an opportunity for you within the Pistons organization.
Motor City Cruise, the Pistons’ G League affiliate, announced a one-day, two-session open player tryout on Saturday, Sept. 14. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their skills through NBA-level drills and scrimmages in front of Pistons and Cruise Basketball Operations teams, according to the team.
NBA G League teams hold open tryouts before each season to scout local talent that can help bolster their rosters during training camp, as well as throughout the Showcase Cup and the G League regular season. Local tryouts are the first step in the long process of building a G League roster, which can often be in flux due to player movement, injuries and NBA call-ups.
Cruise’s open tryouts have produced several G League players in the past, including Sam Peek and Malique Jacobs.
Peek appeared in 14 games for Cruise last season and was part of the Pistons’ Summer League roster last July, where he averaged 4.5 points and two rebounds in two appearances.
Jacobs, who played three years for Kent State after transferring from the JUCO ranks, made Cruise’s opening roster last season. He received an invite to training camp based on his performance in open tryouts and then earned a spot on the full roster. Jacobs spoke to James L. Edwards IIISenior NBA writer covering the Pistons for The Athleticafter being part of the G League team describe his journey.
Jacobs played three games with the Cruises before being placed on waivers.
