In the quiet moments of the offseason, basketball fans wonder and dream about what the upcoming season might be like. So let’s have some fun and predict what the future holds. Sacramento Kings“The best offensive, defensive and overall formations will be those of the 2024-25 season.
To start, a quick look back at Sacramento’s best lineups from last season (minimum 30 minutes played together).
What stands out is Davion Mitchell’s impact on both ends of the floor. I think Jordan McLaughlin can match Davion’s production, but he has a lot of responsibility to fill.
The other notable point is that the Kings’ best defense featured Malik Monk and Domantas Sabonis, two players who aren’t known for their defense. Sabonis gets a bad rap for his defense, but he’s a better defender than people give him credit for.
Now let’s move on to predictions for next season, starting with the attack.
Best Offensive Lineup Prediction: D. Fox, K. Huerter, D. DeRozan, K. Murray, Domantas Sabonis
The hardest part of this prediction is choosing between Monk and Kevin Huerter. Ultimately, it’s Huerter’s shooting that has made this team one of the best. Monk brings offensive power but has a similar style to Fox and DeRozan. Huerter, on the other hand, brings versatility that pairs well with the other four.
Having two shot creators, two knockdown shooters and Sabonis to lead the offense creates plenty of scoring opportunities. Good luck to defenses trying to slow down this high-level roster.
Best Defensive Composition Prediction: J. McLaughlin, M. Monk, K. Murray, T. Lyles, A. Len
While the offense is pretty straightforward, there are a few viable options for predicting the defensive lineup. The first thing you’ll notice is the exclusion of Keon Ellis. Keon will be one of, if not the most influential individual defenseman on the team, but I think he’ll be paired with offensive players to round out lineups rather than the Kings fielding an all-defensive lineup.
Obviously McLaughlin and Len should be in the mix. They were THE two best defenders in the entire NBA last season in terms of defensive rating. From there, it was a matter of rounding it out with a reasonable team that will likely reach the minutes threshold.
Keegan emerged as a top-tier defender last season and Trey still seems to be in the right spot. For the fifth spot, Monk gets the nod due to the need to round out the roster to be playable on both ends of the floor.
Best Overall Composition Prediction: D. Fox, K. Ellis, D. DeRozan, K. Murray, D. Sabonis
It’s a good sign that there are so many potential options for the best overall lineup. Ultimately, I went with what I think is the most balanced lineup the Kings can come up with. Fox, Keon, and Keegan all offer above-average defense, while Fox, DeRozan, Keegan, and Sabonis are all very potent on the offensive end.
This is a team that can do it all: turn defense into offense, score in isolation, and knock down open shots. The chances of them being the best team in terms of numbers are slim due to the five players likely to play a lot of minutes together and balance out over time, but I couldn’t help but keep it simple and go with the most straightforward answer.
