The Thunder’s standout rookie turned in one of his best performances of the season Wednesday night against the Jazz.

Chet Holmgren recorded a career-high 35 points on just 18 shots with 14 rebounds, coupled with his defensive impact of three blocks and two steals. The effort helped Oklahoma City earn their 48th win of the season, moving them closer to their first 50-win season in nearly a decade.

Of course, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander typical 30-plus points stuck there, as he recorded his 50th game this season with 30 or more points, with 31 in the win.

And after their victory at the Paycom Center, Gilgeous-Alexander had a lot to say about his rookie forward.

Gilgeous-Alexander said of how Holmgren was able to navigate to the rim so often: “Chet was talented, and then they were in pick-and-rolls…he can shoot, has a really good touch , can pass, so he had a field day.

“It’s a testament to his work, his talent level, he’s a really good guy.”

The level of talent on display was greater than the potential we had all witnessed this season. This type of performance where Holgmren can showcase his ability to take over and help close out a game is another step in his maturation and recognition as a true two-way threat on this team.

He didn’t have to take it the easy way out, however, as his role, his own energy level and his competitive nature require him to always have an impact on the ball, which can put him in quite difficult situations.

“His nose is literally in every play,” Gilgeous-Alexander added, “…he tries to block every shot. He blocks most of them, affects most of them. He literally puts his face on the line for 90% of the game and that’s it. why we see him sacrifice his situation.

Holmgren’s infectious energy will be needed for the remainder of a tough season for Oklahoma City, which hopes to hold on to the Western Conference’s lone seed.
