San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is unlike any other player in NBA history. The 2.13m phenom was dominant in his rookie season and plans to improve as his NBA career progresses.
In a recent episode of the Club 520 PodcastSix-time NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan shared a story about his clash with Wembanyama last season during a game between the Spurs and Chicago Bulls.
“You see it now,” DeRozan said of Wembanyama’s abilities. “Even the way he played in the Olympics. The way he just played in the championship game. He’s still a kid, bro. … Now look at how he’s going to be this year.”
Of his game against Wembanyama last season, DeRozan said: “We played them this year, I swear I had a drive to the lane – I was on one side of the key, he was on the other side. I pulled up for the layup and shot the ball out. He was on the other side of the key. I just knew he had the recovery length to be able to block anything I threw at him. You just look him in the eye and know he’s going to be one of them, for sure.”

It’s a big compliment for Wembanyama from one of the game’s established stars. After spending three seasons with the Spurs, DeRozan also said Wembanyama could benefit greatly from head coach Gregg Popovich.
