The Sixers announced Friday evening shortly after their victory against the Hornets that they waived the two-way contract of player Kenneth Lofton Jr.
After signing with the Sixers in late December, Lofton missed time with a sprained left shoulder and personal reasons. He ultimately only made two pointless appearances as a Sixer and never entered head coach Nick Nurse’s backup man chart.
The 21-year-old left-hander played in 11 games for the Delaware Blue Coats of the G League and averaging 26.4 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
Lofton scored 43 points last Friday in the Blue Coats’ win over Grand Rapids Gold. For better or worse, Lofton has an unconventional game. He’s 6-foot-6 and 275 pounds and thrives on post-ups and iso hits.
Darius Bazley’s 10-day contract has expired and he is back in Delaware. Right now, that means the Sixers have two open regular roster spots and one open two-way spot.
Rookies Terquavion Smith and Ricky Council IV are still on two-way contracts. Council has been earning rotation minutes with the Sixers since early February and appears to be a good candidate to convert his contract to a standard NBA deal.
Across the league, Friday was the last day players could be waived and remain eligible for this season’s playoffs. Teams can sign players until the end of the regular season.
