Fans are wondering if Keldon will give up his No. 3 jersey for San Antonio newcomer Chris Paul. It appears that is not the case.
SAN ANTONIO — Before entering the NBA, San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson wore No. 3 at Kentucky and Oak Hills Academy in Virginia.
He chose this jersey number for two reasons.
He is the third child in his family. And, growing up, his favorite player was the new member of the Spurs: Chris Paul.
“I was the third child in my family,” Johnson said. “And growing up, Chris Paul was my favorite player. I watched a lot of his highlights growing up.”
But with Paul’s arrival, many wonder if Johnson will give up his long-time jersey number to his favorite player who has worn No. 3 longer than he has.
Speculation was sparked during Paul’s presentation conference, where he did not brandish a Spurs jersey with the number 3, or any other number for that matter.
During a meeting in South Padre Island, Johnson revealed that he would keep the No. 3 jersey.
“Are you keeping the No. 3 shirt?” Spurs fan Victor Juarez asked Johnson.
Said Johnson: “Yes, I’ll be number 3 next year, for sure.”
And there you have it, straight from Johnson himself.
Of course, things could change between now and the start of the new season. Maybe Johnson gives in? Maybe Paul pays Johnson for the number, or the powers that be pressure him to give up No. 3 to Paul?
But now the question becomes: What new jersey number will Paul choose after wearing it in the NBA for 19 years?
Let us know what you think, Spurs fans. Should Keldon have given up his No. 3 Spurs jersey for the NBA veteran, knowing Paul was his favorite player growing up?
