The GOAT debate will always be a hot topic of discussion in the NBA community, as fans will always come up with their own reasons to justify their choice. While fans may not always agree on a name, former NBA players and legends often boil it down to one name. San Antonio Spurs legend Avery Johnson is the latest to join the list of former icons who believe Michael Jordan is the greatest player to ever grace the game.
Johnson recently joined Mark Jackson and his son Bluu on the show Come talk to me. During the episode, Jackson wanted to know who Avery’s GOAT was. Here’s what the former Spurs player had to say,
“We can really crunch all the numbers. You can even just look at the eye test, but everyone else is way behind Mike.” [Michael Jordan]. And that’s not disrespect.

Johnson played in the NBA for 16 years before becoming a coach, so the Spurs legend has been around for a long time. But after seeing Jordan in person, Avery had to award the Bulls legend the GOAT title.
He then listed the reasons why he chose MJ over others who have also accomplished great things.
“When you win six championships and you’re the MVP of all six, you never get to Game 7. And all the DPOYs, All-Defense First Team, All-NBA First Team, MVPs, regular-season MVPs.”
Johnson also brought up another lesser-known statistic about Jordan. MJ has played with the most free agents with a single team and holds the most championships in that segment. Johnson also mentioned that MJ had to go through the iconic teams of the Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons and Lakers.
MJ also beat the Jazz’s Stockton-Malone duo. Not to mention the Blazers team led by Clyde Drexler, who Johnson said had a good chance of winning a title.
Add it all up and there’s no player that comes close to what MJ has done, at least not Avery Johnson.
