Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors formally approved Kamala Harris for the President of the United States. He did so by quoting Warriors superstar Steph Curry in a mic drop moment.
“Once the votes are counted (on November 5), in the words of the great Steph Curry, we can say to Donald Trump… good night!” Kerr said at the ceremony. Democratic National Convention Monday, reconstruction Curry’s Viral Three-Point Celebration.
Kerr made an appearance on the first day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls, where Kerr won five NBA championships (1996-99, 2003), fresh off leading the U.S. men’s national basketball team to a fifth consecutive gold medal to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games earlier this month.
“As you know, a lot of good things happened at the United Center, especially in the ’90s. You kids Google ‘Michael Jordan’ and you can read all about it,” Kerr joked. “There was an incredible atmosphere in the building back then and I feel that same winning spirit here tonight.”
Although Kerr said he would be criticized for speaking at a political event — “I can see the ‘shut up and hiss’ tweets being thrown around as we speak” — the 58-year-old said this upcoming election is “too important as an American citizen not to speak out.”

“As a coach and a former player … I believe in a certain kind of leadership,” Kerr said. “I believe leaders have to have dignity. I believe leaders have to tell the truth. I believe leaders have to be able to laugh at themselves. I believe leaders have to care and love the people they lead. I believe leaders have to be logical and expert, but with the full understanding that none of us have all the answers. In fact, some of the best answers come from the team.”
Kerr said he “sees all of those qualities” in Harris and her running mate, the Minnesota governor. Tim Walz.
“I can’t think of a better metaphor for what this country represents than the way Team USA came together at the Olympics. We had players from all over our great country … joining forces to wear the red, white and blue,” Kerr said. “The joy, compassion and commitment to our country that we saw at the Olympics is what Kamala Harris and Tim Walz have and what our country needs. Leadership. True leadership. Not the kind that seeks to divide us, but the kind that recognizes and celebrates our common purpose.”
Last month, Harris met with Kerr and the U.S. men’s national basketball team during a training session in Las Vegas before the team embarks on its Olympic journey in Paris. Kerr said his visit was “a great reminder that we’re playing for our country and Vice President Harris was great.”
