Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr helped lead Team USA to gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but this could be his last stint with the program. The four-time NBA champion head coach is unlikely to continue coaching Team USA, with a few internal candidates emerging as likely replacement options.

In a new report by NBA insider Marc Stein via his SubstackIt has been revealed that LA Clippers head coach Ty Lue and Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra are the two options being considered by USA Basketball to replace Kerr as the program’s next head coach.

Steve Kerr “USAB should not continue as the head coach of the United States men’s basketball team after coaching at last summer’s Olympics and World Cup and serving as an assistant to Gregg Popovich at the 2019 World Cup and the 2021 Tokyo Olympics,” Stein wrote. “USAB should choose either Miami Erik Spoelstra or the LA Clippers Tyronn Lueboth assistants to Kerr, as his replacement.

Lue and Spoelstra both recently signed significant contract extensions with their respective organizations.

ESPN reported Lue’s contract is worth about $14 million a year.

Stein did not specify whether this was Kerr’s decision, USA Basketball’s or a mutual decision, but it is likely mutual given previous reports. Kerr has had a lot of success with Team USA and appears open to handing the team over to either Lue or Spoelstra, both NBA champions.
