Isaac Okoro remains a restricted free agent with just weeks to go before training camp begins, and he and the The Cleveland Cavaliers According to reports, they had little discussion with each other during the off-season.
Recent reports also indicate that the Cavs could consider trading Okoro sometime next month. There is already a list of emerging teams that could be interested in trading for the 3-and-D winger if the Wine and Gold decides to move him.
By Sam Amico of Hoops Wire“Okoro is likely to accept his qualifying offer at this point. That would make a trade even easier. The Detroit Pistons and former Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff are very interested in Okoro. The San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards are other players identified by Hoops Wire sources.”
The Pistons and Wizards are rebuilding teams that could easily find value in signing an athletic 23-year-old who fits their team’s overall schedule. Detroit and Washington were both in the NBA’s bottom five in defensive rating last season.
San Antonio, meanwhile, is hoping to return to the playoffs next season, even though they already have more depth at wing. However, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan have never been as renowned for their defense as Okoro has been throughout his career.
The Clippers are the red card here. Any team could always use another 3-and-D player if it fits their salary cap. However, they already have players like Derrick Jones and Terance Mann who have similar skills to Okoro.
It will be interesting to see if Okoro makes Cleveland’s opening night roster or if they actually move in the coming weeks.
