THE Utah Jazz The Blue Bombers had a relatively quiet offseason when it came to the free-agent market. Their moves weren’t earth-shattering, but Drew Eubanks, Patty Mills and Svi Mykhailiuk signed low-risk deals with only the first few years guaranteed.

So, is Utah’s 2024-25 roster a complete product? According to The bleacher ReportIt would be in Utah’s best interest to make another move. Bleacher Report ranked the NBA’s top five remaining free agents and sees point guard Dennis Smith Jr. as a good fit for the rebuilding Jazz.

“Sending Kris Dunn to the Los Angeles Clippers actually opens up a spot for the DSJ archetype. He can’t defend the same way, but he’s someone who can be thrown to the opponent’s best guard while still putting pressure on the basket on the other end of the floor.”

“Asking Smith to do typical things on the floor — and consistently make three-pointers — is probably going a little too far. That’s fine.”

“Utah needs to develop Keyonte George as well as Collin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson to fill their offensive quota. And if the Jazz don’t want to fully commit to winning next season, at least one of the latter two will finish the year on a new team, which will open up even more opportunities for the soon-to-be-27-year-old DSJ.” — Dan Favale

Smith Jr. was once a top lottery pick, selected with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, just two picks behind current Jazzman Lauri Markkanen. He is coming off a season with the Brooklyn Nets He averaged 6.6 points per game while shooting just 29.4 percent from three-point range. His lack of three-point efficiency could explain why Smith hasn’t found a suitor to play for yet.

Bleacher Report is right that Sexton or Clarkson could indeed be traded during the season, but I’m not sure that’s a good enough reason to bring in another point guard. Remember, the Jazz have Mills, who could be used for minutes if either or both players are traded.

Additionally, the Jazz chose to gamble on a promising point guard in the 2024 NBA Draft. Utah selected Isaiah Collier with the 29th overall pick, and signing Smith Jr. would certainly hamper Collier’s opportunities to get live reps at the NBA level.

Collier had a strong showing in this year’s Summer League and had a chance to be part of the starting rotation as a backup. That ship may have sailed with the signing of Mills. Collier may now be on the same path as Tayor Hendricks and Bryce Sensabaugh to get NBA minutes. Both first-round picks in the 2023 draft spent much of the first half of the season with the Salt Lake City Stars in the G-League.

There’s still a chance that Jazz CEO Danny Ainge could make another move. However, given that the Jazz are expected to focus on developing players who have a chance to be a part of the future with the Mills signing, the chances of Smith Jr. landing in Salt Lake City are unlikely.
