The brother of TORONTO Raptors star RJ Barrett has died, his family confirmed in a heartbreaking statement today.
THE Raptors shared the tragic news on Thursday, revealing that Barrett’s brother, Nathan, died on Tuesday surrounded by family and friends.
The cause of death and Nathan’s age have not yet been released.
While asking for privacy, his devastated family described their loved one as “caring, kind, loving and admirable”.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the loss of our beloved son and brother, Nathan Tyler Barrett, who passed away on Tuesday, March 12, surrounded by his family, church and friends,” they said in a statement. statement shared by the Toronto Raptors on Thursday.
“Even though our family is devastated by this great loss, we will continue to cherish the memories and time spent together.”
Nathan’s former basketball coach, Chris Stewart, also shared a heartfelt message following the news, revealing that Nathan was studying to become a pilot.
“Nathan was only with us a short time in Grade 7 before moving to Florida, but every time he came back to Mississauga the boys would connect.” Stewart said.
“I saw Nathan last summer, all tall, with a big smile and he was excited to tell me about how he was starting school to become a pilot.

On Wednesday, Barrett, 23, did not play in Toronto’s 113-104 loss to the Detroit Pistons.
He was ruled out for Friday night’s game against the Magic of Orlando.
Barrett is in his fifth NBA season and first with the Raptors after being traded earlier in the season by the New York Knicks.
He appeared in 27 games with Toronto.
