THE Portland Trail Blazers will honor center Bill Walton at the team’s game with the Detroit Pistons March 9, 2025. Several members of the media disclosed the date of the commemoration Wednesday night. Walton died on May 27 of this year after living with cancer for several years. He played 10 seasons in the NBA over a 13-year span, his first four with the Blazers, who drafted him first overall in 1974 out of UCLA NBA Project.
During his tenure in Portland, Walton won the NBA MVP Award (1977-78) as well as the NBA Finals MVP in 1977 after bringing the Blazers the only championship in franchise history.
As Blazer’s Edge alumnus Danny Marang points out in the tweet above, Walton’s son Luke is currently an assistant coach on the Pistons bench and will likely be in attendance when his father is honored.
