Steph Curry and Kevin Durant were arguably the greatest duo of all time when they were teammates on the Golden State Warriors. Despite only playing three seasons together, Curry and Durant repeated as champions in 2017 and 2018.

Reaching the NBA Finals again in 2019, the Warriors lost to the Toronto Raptors largely due to injuries to Durant and Klay Thompson.

Joining a 73-9 Warriors team that eliminated his Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, Durant was confident he would build the most dominant team in the NBA. Even if that’s what happened, Curry had to adjust a bit after being voted the unanimous NBA MVP in 2016.

On a recent episode of The Knuckleheads podcast, three-time Warriors champion Shaun Livingston revealed an important conversation between Curry and Durant during that 2017 season that really helped elevate the team.

“After that Christmas game (in 2017), there was an internal conversation between the two of them,” Livingston revealed.[Durant said]“I need you to be Steph Curry.” And then once Steph said, “All right, KD’s good to us,” it was unstoppable from there.

Not wanting Curry to hesitate too much, Durant made it clear he wanted the MVP title himself for a second term.

Curry averaged 25.3 points that season, a step back from the NBA-leading 30.1 points he had scored the previous season, but he added another championship.
