The Brooklyn Nets now have control of their first-round picks for the next two years, which should create some intrigue regarding the team’s future.

While future stars could join the Nets via the draft, it will likely mean that the product they offer over the next two regular seasons could be mediocre. However, Bleacher Report reporter Dan Favale points out that the Nets could see a quick turnaround in the grand scheme of things.

“Brooklyn is betting far more than any other team on the next two years. Regaining control of its 2025 and 2026 first-round picks ensures that losses will pile up. Even if the Nets are better than they’re supposed to be, management won’t let that happen,” Favale writes“Giving up two years of competitive aspirations in a three-year window warrants consideration at the last spot. But Brooklyn’s 2027 first-round pick is still controlled by Houston. That suggests the Nets will look to recommit for the 2026-27 campaign.”

The Nets essentially have two years to get a lottery pick or two to build around and a veteran or two via free agency to build a competitive roster so they don’t have to give the Rockets a high pick in 2027.

This year, Brooklyn showed teams how they react when they don’t have control of their picks, and they tried to field a competitive team, but they failed to qualify for the play-in tournament last season. Maybe things will change in three years, when they implement a similar plan.
