The Washington Wizards just selected Alex Sarr with the second overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and are already being touted as perhaps the favorite to have the worst record in the league and thus the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. As of today, we are just under a year away from the upcoming draft, which is already considered better at the top thanks to forward Cooper Flagg. At 6’1″, Flagg has long been touted as a potential first overall pick in 2025 due to his strong two-way game that would immediately help any NBA team.
The Wizards, along with the Brooklyn Nets and Detroit Pistons, are considered the three teams with the best chances to select Flagg first overall.
Derek Parker of SI’s NBA Draft recently analyzed the Wizards’ current situation and how it relates to the 2025 NBA Draft, Flagg and others.
Wizards are in the same boat [as the Nets]with perhaps even fewer current talents, such as Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington and many others. There is no doubt that Washington will be fighting for the first picks in the upcoming drafts, with Flagg likely being their top priority, if they get the first pick.

At best, teams will have a 14% chance of getting the No. 1 pick. But as the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery showed us, that doesn’t really mean much. The Atlanta Hawks moved up nine spots overall to get the No. 1 overall pick and Zaccharie Risacher. Then, the Houston Rockets moved up seven spots in the same draft to No. 3, which dropped the league-worst Pistons to No. 5.
