It was announced earlier this week that the Utah Jazz had signed Patty Mills to a veteran’s minimum contract. However, Tony Jones of The Athletic revealed that the signing wouldn’t be official for a few weeks for one reason.
A little bit about the Patty Mills signing. I don’t expect it to be official for a few weeks. I think the Jazz want to continue to keep their financial options open. The goal here is for Patty to be a mentor on and off the court. The Jazz want to develop the youth this season

Jones later confirmed what Jazz still has in its arsenal.

Using this exception could help the Jazz get another asset. If teams want to improve, they also want to save money. Having the Jazz help them do that could potentially be a win-win situation for both sides.
At the same time, it depends on who they get and for how long. Would the Jazz think it’s worth taking on a contract that could somewhat hurt their long-term flexibility? Well, what else would they get back?
There are several players the Jazz could acquire, not only to get another asset, but it might also be worth giving them a boost because, at this point, they don’t have much else to lose.
