THE Detroit Pistons are not expected to enter the Eastern Conference playoff race in 2025, leaving them in position to potentially act as sellers before the 2025 trade deadline.

This summer, Detroit made some key changes in an effort to turn the franchise around. After overhauling the front office and coaching staff, the Pistons made some key roster additions in an attempt to blend proven, productive veterans with their young core.

It’s clear that several young Detroit players have long-term prospects within the organization. For others, they could find themselves in the rumor mill throughout the 2024-25 NBA season.

Former fifth overall pick Jaden Ivey is a name to watch as the summer draws to a close. According to Bleacher Report Eric Pincus, some NBA sources “wonder” if Ivey is part of the Pistons’ long-term plan at this stage of the rebuild.

In 2022, the Pistons selected Ivey out of Purdue. With the team in the midst of a rebuild, Ivey immediately earned playing time, starting all but one of 74 games.

Averaging 31 minutes of playing time, Ivey scored 16 points per game on 42 percent shooting. He also dished out five assists and averaged four rebounds per game.

Last season, Ivey didn’t experience a dip, but he did regress. In 77 games, most of them as a starter, Ivey produced 15 points per game on 43 percent shooting. He averaged four assists and three rebounds per game.

The fit between Ivey and Cade Cunningham has been uncertain for two seasons. With key veterans arriving in Detroit via trades and free agency, Ivey could see his role reduced in season three, leading to another season of statistical regression.

Fortunately for Detroit, cutting ties with Ivey wouldn’t mean they would have to give him away at a discounted price to an interested suitor. There could be a competitive market for Ivey, involving teams with a much better fit and situation for the developing young back.

Last month, it was reiterated that the New York Knicks had already expressed interest in Ivey and that they could be considered a team to watch down the road. The Knicks likely wouldn’t be the only ones in that market.

At the moment, there aren’t many rumors surrounding Ivey. However, that could change during the 2024-25 season.
