Shortly after winning the 2024 NBA championship, Brad Stevens turned his attention to extending the Boston Celtics championship window. The president of basketball operations quickly began negotiating contract extensions with several members of the team, including Jayson Tatumwho signed a Supermax with the franchise.
A part of the The Celts“Domination comes from continuity within the roster. Tatum and Jaylen Brown have spent their entire careers with the franchise. Despite his few years of absence, Al Horford was part of the team for most of Joe Mazzulla’s run to the title. In fact, the majority of Celtics players spent three or more seasons together.
In a recent article for ESPN, Neil Paine ranked the roster continuity of every team in the league. The Celtics came in third on that list, behind the rebuilding Celtics. Houston Rockets and budding Orlando Magic.
“There’s also an element of continuity at the heart of Boston’s success, as evidenced by the persistence of Tatum and Brown paying off after seven years together,” Paine wrote. “That’s part of why the Celtics are high in the rankings, as no team will bring back more weighted minutes from the past three seasons in 2024-25. Boston will also defend its title with each of its top 11 players in WAR from last season; Svi Mykhailiuk (1.0 WAR) is the only offseason start that earned more than 0.1 wins for the Celtics last year.
Boston will enter the new season with the hopes of retaining its NBA title. There have been very few changes to the roster this summer, as management has committed to keeping the same core that dominated the NBA last season. Stevens wants Boston to make continuity part of their calling card. Everyone on the roster knows what to expect from each other and how to get the most out of their teammates.
Fortunately for the Celtics, they don’t just have continuity. They have one of the best rosters in the NBA with the deepest top-six rotation in the league. The fact that most of them have been playing together for years is just an added bonus, but it certainly seems to help.
