There is a theory that some star NBA players can sometimes improve their team by not playing. The theory owes its name to a historical study carried out by the New York Knicks this came after their star big man, Patrick Ewing, went down with an injury.
But at least one NBA analyst thinks this theory might be better explained by a handful of more recent examples, including how the Boston Celtics took a step forward when the star point guard Kyrie Irving was injured. The 2017–18 NBA season ended with a Game 7 loss in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Irving-less Cleveland Cavaliers, which changed the team’s forward focus.
The folks behind the YouTube channel “Andy Hoops” made a video of five examples from recent NBA history.
Take a look at the embedded clip above to hear their case.
