When The GOAT debate is onThere are usually a handful of players considered for this honor. Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are among the most popular answers. But as he continues to dominate and age gracefully within the NBA, Does Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant have any arguments for this?? NBA Legend James Worthy believes he actually could.
Kevin Durant’s list of accolades is elite, and he’s far from done. KD is a 14-time NBA All-Star, two-time NBA champion, MVP, and four-time Olympic gold medalist. When you compare his resume to some of the league’s top players, he’s certainly one of the best.
James Worthy Talks Kevin Durant’s GOAT

Lakers legend James Worthy came out to support the Harold and Carole Pump Foundation gala late last month. The foundation gathers each year for a gala/dinner to raise money for cancer research. This year’s honorees included Rickey Henderson, Allen Iverson, Lawrence Taylor, Dominique Wilkins, Dave Gilbert and Michael Triplett.
That’s where James Worthy spoke with ClutchPoints about a number of topics, including: Team USA’s incredible game at the 2024 Paris Olympics. When asked if Durant and the Suns star could be the “greatest of all time,” Worthy agreed that he should definitely be considered once all is said and done.
“I think so,” Worthy said, agreeing with the idea that Durant could be a GOAT. “I’ve loved him since Texas. If I had to pick someone, it might be… You know, Steph’s a three-point shooter, but Durant is a poised player in his prime. And I think because there’s so much attention on other players right now… He hasn’t been overlooked, but he’s just made strides and he can still put up stats.”
Over his 16-year NBA career with the Thunder, Warriors, Nets and Suns, Kevin Durant averaged 27.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game on 50.1 percent shooting and 38.7 percent from three-point range. Outside of his rookie year, when he averaged 20.3 points per game, Durant never averaged less than 25 points per game.
“I loved him in Texas,” James Worthy added. “I love his range, the way he can get to the three-point range, you can’t stop him in the mid-range game, he’s a great defensive player, and he doesn’t get talked about enough. If you’re talking about the top seven players that could be the best of all time, he’s one of them in my opinion. He’s just a phenomenal player.”

Durant turns 36 at the end of September, but he shows no signs of slowing down. He and the Phoenix Suns are hoping to win the NBA championship, which would be his third if they do.
In the same interview with ClutchPoints, James Worthy also said Durant’s American team managed to resist the scares of Serbia or France, even though the best players in the NBA are currently international players.
“I know Serbia, they had to come back,” James Worthy recalled. “It was a little scary, but they kept their composure, they played together, and we have to continue to show that America is still the best. When you look at the NBA, the top eight or nine players are not American, so they’re playing catch-up. But it’s good to see that we can still do our best and go win a gold medal.”
Kevin Durant and the Suns will return to action with their season opener on October 23 against the LA Clippers.
