THE The Dallas Mavericks took an NBA finalist team and made it much better this offseason by adding former NBA champion Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors. While Thompson is no longer the player he was during the Warriors’ dynastic years in the 2010s, he remains one of the best three-point shooters in the league today and should add some punch to a Mavericks team This is exactly what was sorely lacking in the NBA Finals.
Recently, the official Mavericks team account on X, formerly Twitter, posted a video of the future Hall of Famer receiving a few shots at the team’s training center.

In the video, Thompson can be seen wearing the headband he’s worn with the Warriors for the past few years and using the same silky, smooth shot that has plagued opponents for more than a decade in the NBA.
Thompson’s departure from the Bay Area was shocking to say the least, and it will be quite the scene when the Mavericks visit the Warriors for the first time during the 2024-25 NBA season in November.
What is the Mavericks’ ceiling in 2024-25?

In theory, the Mavericks have all the pieces they need to make another strong playoff run this year. Luka Doncic is theoretically entering the prime years of his career, and Kyrie Irving (when not playing against the Boston Celtics) remains one of the best isolation scorers the game has ever seen, even well into his 30s now.
Thompson should add another dimension to the Mavericks’ offense that stalled in their NBA Finals loss to the Celtics, and replacing Derrick Jones’ sporadic three-point shooting with Thompson’s sharpshooting will go a long way toward making Dallas’ offense much more potent.

Of course, at this point in his career, Thompson is a weak point on defense, an area he thrived in before suffering back-to-back devastating leg injuries in 2019 and 2020. That deficiency will need to be worked around for a Mavericks team that already has to navigate the defensive frailties of Doncic and Irving.
Still, while they’re still clearly a tier (or two) below the Celtics, there’s no reason the Mavericks can’t once again be among the Western Conference’s elite this season.
Dallas is scheduled to open its season on October 23 against the San Antonio Spurs.
