If you ask them, they will tell you.
It hasn’t been an easy road to get to this point — being a woman in the sports broadcasting industry comes with its share of challenges — but on Monday, it was all about the women at Chase Center. Seven of them were on the microphone to call the Warriors game and do the pre- and post-game shows.
“There’s a sense of triumph because there are so many obstacles,” ESPN analyst Lachina Robinson said.
She and A’s play-by-play announcer Jenny Cavnar set the tone. And NBC Sports’ Laura Britt and Kerith Burke, former basketball player Zena Keita and former Stanford star Jayne Appel-Marinelli hosted the pre- and post-game shows while Kylen Mills co-hosted “Dubs Talk Live.”
“I think it’s really exciting that women are getting their opportunity in journalism, being able to call the games, equal opportunity for everyone, it’s awesome,” said Warriors fan Jenei Peterson.
Monday’s show took place during Women’s History Month and at a critical time in the season, as the Warriors head toward the playoffs.
“He feels good. If you can talk about basketball, you can talk about basketball. The players don’t care. If you know the game, you know the game, so we want to show that we know the game and that we love him as much as anyone,” Burke said.
But they don’t want this to happen just one night.
“I want it to be all the time, I don’t want it to feel like a pat on the head, ‘yes women,’ no. And I feel like I’m in a well-supported area with a lot of women around me,” the NBC Sports Bay Area reporter said.
“There is a lot of work to be done in our society when it comes to fairness and equality for women, whether it’s equal pay or health care,” Robinson said. “On the contrary, I hope today will highlight the value of women. »
Highlight Monday, but also pave the way for future generations.
“This gives us an opportunity to pause and say what we are doing to impact the next generation of women to ensure they have more opportunities,” Robinson said.
